I would like to thank all of the Nassau County residents who participated in the August 1st referendum. I am disappointed and heartbroken with the outcome. However, what I believe is every time a door closes, another one will open. I have lived on Long Island for almost 60 years and it is my home. I am not giving up on Long Island and I hope you won’t either.

Taxes have been a key topic of discussion on Long Island for as long I can remember. Invariably those discussions were accompanied by much hand-wringing and a chorus of resignation that "things would never change."

Today we honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the service of our country. Memorial Day is a time to reflect upon the sacrifices made by members of the armed services and express our gratitude for the protection they continue to provide. During this time of war, we must always keep in mind the families who will forever be separated from their loved ones. We mourn their loss and honor the sacrifice of heroes of all generations. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I would like to thank the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, both from New York and across the nation, for their dedicated service. |

Our state is at a crossroads. After years of overtaxing and overspending, we are at the fiscal brink. We can continue down our current road to financial ruin or we can take a new course – a road to recovery.

On this day, we celebrate a man who quested for equality and liberty. For this day, all of us having the ability to celebrate his legacy with the fine arts, music, expanded ways and culture appreciation. One of the awards I am always appreciative is the one named after Martin Luther King Jr. The Monday we are off from work or school, is not just a day to be spent doing nothing but should be a day of reflection. A day to remember those like Martin Luther King Jr. who at the time of the greatest adversity sough for equal rights and help shaped the world we live in today. During this difficult times, when some even question the existence of our government, The Nobel Peace Prize winner had said it best, “Though life at its best is a creative synthesis of opposites in fruitful harmony… do to us what you will, and we shall continue to love you.” |
